Three sent off as West Brom-Cardiff clash ends with melee after full-time whistle

The New Year is here and the action across the EFL continues to come thick and fast.

Saturday saw 14 games take place across the Championship, League One and League Two whilst another six games were played on Sunday in the second and third tiers.

Once again, a clutch of matches were postponed as a result of the rising number of positive Covid-19 cases.

It is an ongoing problem that has already wiped out 12 matches across the opening weekend of 2022.

Here, we look at five talking points to emerge from Saturday and Sunday's games that did take place.

Ill-tempered clash at Albion

West Brom's form has stuttered big time over the past couple of months.

Installed by many as favourites for automatic promotion, Albion's poor run continued with a 1-1 draw at home to relegation-battling Cardiff City.

Callum Robinson cancelled out James Collins' opener whilst Alex Mowatt was sent off late on for the Baggies.

But the real drama occurred late on. Home boss Valerien Ismael was incensed when the full-time whistle was blown rather than a penalty given to his side.

It led to a melee between both sets of players, resulting in West Brom's Sam Johnstone and Aden Flint both joining Mowatt in being shown a red card.

The stalemate means Albion have won just two of their last nine - perhaps the reason behind the purchase of striker Daryl Dike, who Ismael knows all about from their time together at Barnsley last season.

Blackburn march on

Blackburn Rovers have been in scintillating form in recent months.

Today's visit of Huddersfield offered them a chance to rack up a seventh straight victory - the first time they would have done so since their famous title-winning Premier League season in 1994-95.

But the Terriers are made of stubborn stuff themselves and even without manager Carlos Corberan in the dugout (he tested positive for Covid-19) they put in a fine defensive display as they sealed a worthy point in a 0-0 draw.

For Rovers, despite not being able to get that historic win the point ensured they move into the automatic promotion spots for the first time this season.

Weimann steals the show

The early game in the Championship on Sunday saw Bristol City win a five-goal thriller at home to Millwall.

And it was Andi Weimann who stole the show, hitting a hat-trick to turn the game on its head after the Lions led 2-1 at half-time.

It kept up a remarkable record for the Austrian who has scored in six games this season, with five of them seeing him hit a brace or treble.

He scored twice against Reading, Cardiff, Barnsley and Huddersfield and also notched once against Coventry, taking his tally to 12 after today's exploits.

He's now fourth on the goalscoring list in the Championship - behind runaway goal machines Aleksandar Mitrovic (22), Ben Brereton Diaz (20) and Dominic Solanke (18).

Shrimps stun drop rivals

Doncaster Rovers' new boss Gary McSheffrey must have thought this management lark was easy, especially at around 3.50pm on Sunday.

But fast forward an hour and he will have been lambasting his players.

Rovers raced into a 3-0 lead at relegation rivals Morecambe inside 30 minutes. Prior to today Rovers were the lowest away scorers in England.

But then the second half saw a Doncaster capitulation, combined with a Morecambe resurrection.

Cole Stockton notched twice to give Donny a scare before Jonathan Obika restored parity. Just a minute later Toumani Diagouraga then notched a seventh goal in what was an incredible game.

The result means the Shrimps climb out of the bottom three whilst McSheffrey's side remain bottom and six points adrift.

McKirdy hits four

Former Aston Villa midfielder Harry McKirdy got 2022 off to a superb start by scoring four times for Swindon Town in their 5-2 win over Northampton.

The 24-year-old achieved the salvo in the space of just 38 minutes, straddling either side of half-time.

It took him to double figures for the season as the Robins look for an immediate promotion back into the third tier.

It moved Swindon up to fifth in League Two and just two points off the automatic spots.
