Three Scots gastropubs mentioned among 'best in the UK'

Three top Scottish gastropubs have been named among the best in the UK.

Unsurprisingly, two of them are run by top Scottish chef Tom Kitchin, who has put real effort into creating two new gastropub ventures.

The first, Scran and Scallie, which Tom opened with fellow chef Dominic Jack is based in the capital and was named the top gastropub in Scotland in an awards list sponsored by Barcelona-based brewer Estrella Damm.

While Tom's follow-up venture The Bonnie Badger, Gullane, almost made the top 100.

Picturesque coastal favourite, The Ship Inn in Elie in Fife, was also named on the prestigious list, rounding off the Scottish entries.

Incredibly, only three Scots pubs made it into the top 100 list, with none making the top 50.

Voted for by more than 100 top foodies and hospitality experts, the Top 50 Gastropubs was conceived in 2009 with the purpose of recognising the hardworking individuals in the gastropubs industry.

Speaking about the awards, Top 50 Gastropubs publisher Chris Lowe said they also aim to be a go-to source for the best pubs to dine at in the UK.

He added: "After a tough two years for the hospitality industry, we are thrilled to see such a strong list of contenders this year, including a new number one and several new entrants.

"The Top 50 Gastropubs provides a platform for food-lovers to explore the very best offerings across the UK."

Edinburgh's leading (and now Scotland's top) gastro-pub, The Scran & Scallie can be found in the trendy Stockbridge area of the city.

Opened in 2013, it's the brainchild of Scottish chefs Dominic Jack and Michelin-starred Tom Kitchin.

The Ship Inn, Elie, Fife (81st)

This wonderful little pub, which claims it is the only pub in the UK to have a cricket team with a pitch on the beach, is vastly popular for its traditional fare.

You'll find some of the best Scottish produce on the menu including local shellfish and Scottish seafood such as Shetland hake and Cullen skink.

The Bonnie Badger, Gullane (93rd)

The second venture from Tom Kitchin to make the list, the Bonnie Badger can be found in the idyllic East Lothian village of Gullane, which lies close to the capital.

With plenty of incredible menu options, including Highland Wagyu beef burgers and locally foraged sea buckthorn meringue, the venue also comes with bedrooms for those looking for a longer stay.
