Three schools had to shut before summer holidays due to coronavirus outbreaks

Three schools in Bury were forced to close before the summer holidays after staff tested positive for coronavirus.

It has emerged that the schools in Bury began to close one-by-one as early as May, but the details of the closures have only just been released this week by the council.

Christ Church Ainsworth CE Primary closed before half-term, followed by Sedgely Park Primary School in Prestwich at the beginning of June, then St Marie’s RC Primary School in Bury shortly after that.

In each school, a member of staff tested positive for the virus. Because of contact with other staff who were then required to self-isolate 'the schools were unable to remain open', according to the council.

The schools then had to be deep cleaned.

Council education boss Julien Kramer said: "All parents of children were immediately notified, as was the local authority and Public Health.

"All schools reopened after 14 days following a deep clean.

"They had continued to set work for their pupils during the closure via their websites, and are all providing a safe environment for the year groups who have returned in which to learn."

"All our schools take the health and safety of their staff and pupils very seriously, and have followed public health guidelines since the start of the lockdown and on reopening," added Mr Kramer.
