Three elderly residents from an aged care home in the Illawarra have been transferred to Wollongong Hospital following an outbreak of COVID-19 at the facility.
Four men and two women who lived on the same floor of the IRT's Tarrawanna Aged Care Centre tested positive for the virus on Thursday.
The facility was placed in lockdown before the residents were moved to separate medical facilities for further monitoring on Friday.
"Three of the residents have been transported to Wollongong Hospital for extra treatment," IRT chief executive Patrick Reid said.
"The remaining residents who are clinically well are being transferred to Ramsay Health Care's Lawrence Hargrave Hospital, where they will be monitored closely for any acute care needs if they arise.
'Minimising risk'
Mr Reid said the decision to transfer the residents was made in consultation with their families, along with state and federal health authorities.
"Our focus remains on minimising the risk to other residents and staff," he said.
The remaining 87 residents and 67 staff have returned negative test results, but Mr Reid said they would be tested again as a precaution.
He said "the majority" of staff at the centre had been fully vaccinated, with a "small number" awaiting their second jab, while 87.5 percent of all residents had received both doses.
It is not known how the centre was exposed.
"We are still trying to work though that," Mr Reid said.
