Three rescued after huge fire breaks out at block of flats

Three people were rescued after a huge fire broke out at a block of flats.

Fire crews were called to Hastie Close in Netherley shortly before 9pm on Tuesday to reports of a wheelie bin fire.

When they arrived at the scene the front entrance of the two storey building was "well alight" and massive flames could be seen coming from the blaze.

Six firefighters entered the block of flats in order to search for people who were still inside.

Three people were rescued from the building and were treated by paramedics from the North West ambulance Service .

Pictures taken at the scene show a fire investigator inspect the significant damage to the front of the building after fire crews, police and paramedics had left.

Shortly after 10pm, Merseyside Fire and Rescue confirmed that after calling four fire engines to the scene, the blaze was out and everyone had been accounted for.

"Crews were alerted at 20.56 and were on scene at 21.01 after a report of a wheelie bin fire. 2 fire engines were initially despatched.

"Crews arrived to find the front entrance and fascia of a two storey flat well alight. They began to fight the fire with a hose reel and main jet.

"At 21.04 crews requested a further engine for breathing apparatus (BA) and began to search the property with 6 firefighters in 3 teams of 2 wearing BA.

"At 21.23 a request for a fourth engine was made to ensure the supply of BA was sufficient.

"Three people have been led to safety from the building by firefighters who continue to fight the fire and search the heavily smoke logged building for people.

"Persons rescued have been given oxygen by crews and are being treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation."

An investigation into the cause of the fire has now been launched.
