Three reintroduces mobile roaming charges for everyone travelling to Europe

Three has become the latest network provider to reintroduce mobile roaming charges for customers travelling in Europe.

New and upgrading pay monthly and Sim-only customers will be charged £2 per day to use their monthly allowance from May 23, 2022.

This new charged will apply to 48 European destinations - see the full list of places below.

Three is also getting rid of its free 'Go Roam' service outside of Europe, with plans to start charging customers £5 per day for this service in 22 countries.

All pay-monthly or Sim-only customers who sign up to a new Three contract or renew their existing contract from October 1 onwards will be affected.

The new charges won't affect pay-as-you-go users.

Three said the changes will apply from May but will affect customers who join or renew from October (PA)

The announcement follows similar moves from rival networks Vodafone and EE, who’ve also confirmed plans to bring back roaming charges.

Mobile firms were previously banned from charging extra fees to use your UK allowance - calls, texts and data - while holidaying in the EU, but this no longer applies now the Brexit transition period is over.

O2 has also changed its “fair use” policy - this caps the amount of your UK data allowance you can use for free while roaming in Europe.

Network providers were allowed to set fair usage caps before Brexit, and this is separate to flat-fee roaming charges.

A spokesperson for Three said: “The new charge ensures that customers are clear on what they will pay when using their phone in another country and only those who roam will pay for the service.

“It will also ensure that we can continue investing in our UK network.”

Sue Davies, Which? head of consumer protection policy, said: “It's really disappointing that Three is reintroducing roaming charges for people travelling in EU countries, as well as other destinations across the world.

“As the UK continues to negotiate trade deals, it should grasp the opportunity to lower the cost of roaming for consumers travelling around the world.

“The UK and EU should also urgently strike a deal on roaming charges to stop companies chipping away at the roaming benefits customers have become used to and to prevent the return of the excessive charges people used to encounter.”
