Three pundits give Newcastle vs Manchester United score predictions

Manchester United will be looking to return with a victory when they face Newcastle in the Premier League in their first match back after the international break.

Erik ten Hag's side progressed to the FA Cup semi-finals with a victory over Fulham in their last game before the break, having also secured their spot in the Europa League quarter-finals after overcoming Real Betis. The Reds won four of their six matches in March, having lost to Liverpool and drawn with Southampton.

United drew 0-0 with Saints on March 12, with Casemiro being sent off in the goalless draw. The Brazilian midfielder will miss the next three domestic matches having already served one game of his four-match ban. Newcastle, meanwhile, currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, two points behind Tottenham in fourth.

The Reds are hopeful that Marcus Rashford will be able to play against the Magpies after withdrawing from England's squad through injury after picking up a knock in the victory over Fulham. Elsewhere, Raphael Varane should also be available for selection after missing the victory over the London outfit.

Here are the pundits' predictions for United's clash with Newcastle:

Chris Sutton (BBC)

"I've been wrong about Manchester United a few times this season but I don't think their form has been that great recently, whatever their results have been like.

"They were very fortunate to recover to beat Fulham in the FA Cup last time out, and that was not the only time recently where they got away with it a bit - they have not been at their best for a while.

"It would still not surprise me at all if Erik ten Hag's side went to St James' Park and won but this is an enormous game in the fight for the top four and I am expecting Newcastle United to rise to the occasion.

"I like the way the Magpies play and, although they have not always turned that into goals, they've had more of a cutting edge since Alexander Isak returned to full fitness. I have a feeling the Sweden striker will make the difference again here."

Sutton's prediction: Newcastle 2-1 United

Paul Merson (Sportskeeda)

"What a game! This game could really open it up. If Newcastle win this game, Man United will need to work hard to get into the top four. They could end up in fifth place in the Premier League table by the end of the weekend.

"Manchester United aren't playing well at the moment and they're very reliant on Marcus Rashford and his goals. Someone else has got to chip in now. They've had some results but they aren't ripping it up. Newcastle are playing at home and a draw isn't good enough for them. I'm going to go with Newcastle to win this game."

Merson's prediction: Newcastle 2-1 United

Mark Lawrenson (Paddy Power)

"In fairness Manchester United have recovered from that 7-0 and it looks as though Newcastle have got themselves back on the straight and narrow.

"I’m going to go for a Newcastle win actually. I think Manchester United are due a defeat and I think this is where it will come. I’m not sure whether Marcus Rashford’s back from this shopping trip or not, though."

Lawrenson's prediction: Newcastle 1-0 United
