Three popular Dublin beaches and swimming hotspots closed as water may cause illness

A number of popular beaches and swimming spots around Dublin's coast have been closed to swimmers for the weekend.

Sandymount Strand, Merrion Strand and Front Strand in Balbriggan are the three affected Dublin locations.

Sandymount Strand has seen this bathing restriction put in place due to pollution caused by animals/birds. The water quality has deteriorated at the beach because of that.

According to beaches.ie, the restrictions could remain in place for 7 days, starting from June 15.

Merrion Strand is another Dublin bathing spot that's had a bathing ban put in place. However, it's not a seven-day ban but an all-season ban on bathing.

It was classified as having "poor water quality" and a "permanent bathing prohibition will be put in place at this location."

Finally, Front Strand in Balbriggan has an "advice against bathing" all-season warning following the 2020 bathing season.

"The reason for this restriction is because Front Strand beach, Balbriggan was classified as having poor water quality following the 2020 bathing season."
