Three police officers in hospital after car smashes into van carrying prisoner

Three officers have been rushed to hospital after a police van with a prisoner crashed with a Range Rover.

The road smash involving the two vehicles happened in Great Homer Street, Liverpool, at around 10.10am.

Merseyside Police confirmed three people were taken to hospital and the van was transporting a prisoner.

The condition of the officers is unknown, the Liverpool Echo reports.

The prisoner travelling in the police carrier is believed to have suffered minor injuries as well but there are no reports they were also taken to hospital.

A spokesman for the force said: "A prisoner travelling in the police carrier is believed to have suffering minor injuries."

Great Homer Street is currently closed in both directions.

Travel Monitor Inrix reports: "Great Homer Street in both directions closed, slow traffic due to accident from Wilbraham Street (Nspcc Building) to B5186 St Anne Street."

A driver tweeted: "Mental down Great Homer Street there. Went past a Matrix which had collided with a Range Rover on the way to town, 10 mins later on the way back and its pure chaos down there."
