Four police officers were killed in a horror motorway crash in Australia.
A witnesses told the Herald Sun the crash involved a semi trailer, which ploughed into two police cars that were parked in the breakdown lane.
The crash happened on the Eastern Freeway, one of the city's busiest roads.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton confirmed a female senior constable and three male officers were killed after a refrigeration truck ploughed into two police cars and a black Porsche parked in the breakdown lane.
It is the largest loss of officers' lives in one incident in the history of Victoria Police.
It has been reported three male police officers from the Traffic Management Unit were unable to be revived at the scene.
The Porsche driver is said to have survived and fled the scene on foot following the crash.
'I strongly suggest that he get himself down to the nearest police station,' Chief Commissioner Ashton told reporters on Wednesday night.
A witness said: "It was carnage.
"There were civilians trying to run around and help, it was horrible."
The truck hit several cars with one trapped underneath the huge vehicle.
Witnesses said the truck driver was pulled out of his truck cabin at the scene by a Good Samaritan and is now assisting police with their enquiries.
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman confirmed paramedics were called to the scene just after 5.40pm (local time) but was unable to provide further details.
VicTraffic has shared a photo on Twitter showing a truck at the crash site.
Dozens of emergency crews at the scene of a collision on the Eastern Freeway in the inner-city suburb of Kew.
The Department of Transport says the freeway’s city-bound lanes are closed between Bulleen Road and the Chandler Highway.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined at this stage.
