Three players to determine Mourinho's transfer strategy as Vertonghen hints at Tottenham stay

Vertonghen opens on future plans

Jan Vertonghen has spoken about his future and has not closed the door on extending his contract at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgian defender will be out of contract this summer and revealed that a number of clubs have registered their interest in his services since the Premier League season was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"I want to sign with the right club. It could be Spurs, or another club. It must be a club with ambition. I want to play in Europe as the national team is important for me,” Vertonghen told Play Sports.

"It might sound weird, but since the corona crisis there is more interest.

"I’m a free agent & some clubs might not have a lot of money."

Defoe describes transfer request before Spurs move

Jermain Defoe has admitted his regret at handing in a transfer request at West Ham United prior to making the move to Tottenham in 2004.

The former England striker described how he spoke to Daniel Levy and was persuaded on the merits of a move to Spurs before reversing his decision and deciding to stay at Upton Park for another season.

“I was thinking about the greats who have played for that club, [Gary] Lineker, [Jurgen] Klinsmann, [Paul] Gascoigne,” he told Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast.

"Of course it was going to be tough to leave West Ham, but it was going to happen at some point.

"I remember thinking it was such a good opportunity at a massive football club, and it just felt right.

"When I look back on it now, maybe I was naive at the time. Maybe if I had asked more questions, like do I really need to do this? Surely if someone wants me, they will come and get me."

Three players who will determine transfer strategy

Jose Mourinho faces an important summer transfer window as Tottenham Hotspur look to rebuild their squad ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Andrew Dowdeswell has identified three players who will determine the club’s transfer strategy and despite the speculation around his future at the club Harry Kane is not one of them.

Davinson Sanchez could be thrust into a more prominent position if one of Toby Alderweireld or Vertonghen leaves North London this summer, so does Mourinho trust the 23-year-old enough to install him as a key figure?

Tanguy Ndombele has struggled to convince Mourinho of his qualities so far while Ryan Sessegnon has endured a stop-start first season as a Tottenham player.

These three names will decide a lot for Mourinho this summer.
