Three players that could add £125m to Manchester United's transfer budget

Manchester United's preparations for the summer transfer window continue as they look to appoint a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Reds have highlighted the midfield as the 'biggest problem' with the likes of Declan Rice and Amadou Haidara among the names mooted with an Old Trafford switch. But the incoming manager has a number of issues on his hands when he walks through the door at Carrington.

Richard Arnold will oversee his first window as United CEO after succeeding Ed Woodward after he stepped aside. Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are among the managerial candidates to lead the Reds into the 2022/23 season.

But for the incoming head coach, he will arrive in the Old Trafford hot seat inheriting a bloated squad, although it looks likely that both Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard will leave on free transfers in the summer. Meanwhile, Dean Henderson saw a winter move in search of first-team minutes blocked and more recently, Marcus Rashford has emerged as the latest unhappy member of Ralf Rangnick's squad.

But three players could depart in the summer and inject over £100m into the transfer budget.

Marcus Rashford

The 24-year-old has emerged as a target of a number of clubs around Europe since his omission from the United starting line-up to play Manchester City. The Manchester Evening News reported this week that Barcelona were among the contenders looking to bring the academy graduate to La Liga.

He was left aggravated by Rangnick's decision to consign his involvement to the bench for the 4-1 derby bruising. According to CIES Football Observatory, the England international is currently valued between £70-£90m.

Dean Henderson

With the Reds set to allow a handful of players to leave on free transfers in the summer and with Henderson having three years remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford, he could add a healthy figure to the pot.

He was a first-team member during David de Gea's dip in form at the end of last season but his bout with COVID saw him miss a month of action. A host of clubs were interested in the Englishman during the January transfer window, although a move was blocked, he could expand his search for first-team minutes ahead of the World Cup in November.

According to CIES, he is estimated to be worth between £15-£20m.

Eric Bailly

The Ivorian is another figure within the Reds dressing room that is unhappy with his lack of involvement in the squad. The central defender has been plagued with injury and loss of form resulting in his slump down the defensive pecking order.

Since the arrival of Raphael Varane, he has gone further down the list. Despite this, Bailly signed an extension in April 2021, keeping him at the club until 2024 with the option for a year extension.

CIES values Bailly at around £10-15m. Following the criticism of the United defence this season, his departure could make way for a defensive addition.
