Three people treated for injuries after crash on A189 in Bedlington

A major Northumberland road was closed due to a four-vehicle collision on Wednesday.

Police closed the A189 southbound between Bedlington and Ashington while the vehicles involved were recovered.

Emergency services were called at around 8am to reports of a multi-vehicle crash.

Northumbria Police said no-one is believed to have been seriously injured but paramedics treated three people at the scene.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Shortly before 8am today (Wednesday) we received a report of a four-vehicle collision on the A189 southbound near the Bedlington turn-off.

“Emergency services are currently at the scene but thankfully nobody is believed to have been seriously injured. The road has been closed and a diversion in place as a clean-up operation continues.

“Motorists are advised to expect increased congestion in the area. We are also asking drivers to leave extra time for journey and to take extra care when travelling in icy conditions.”

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service added: "We were called at 8.09am to a four-vehicle road traffic collision on the Spine Road southbound by the Bedlington turn off.

"We dispatched double-crewed ambulance and treated and discharged three patients on scene."
