Three people taken to hospital following collision on the A19 in County Durham

Three people have been taken to hospital after a "horrific" collision on the A19.

The crash involving two cars happened at about 10.20am on Saturday at the Hutton Henry turn-off in County Durham.

The A19 northbound carriageway was then closed to traffic between the A179 at the Sheraton junction and the A181 Castle Eden Interchange until just before 12pm.

Emergency services including the Great North Air Ambulance Service attended the scene and the casualties were taken to hospital.

A police officer at the scene said “Fortunately no one was seriously injured," TeessideLive reports.

People on social media who had witnessed the crash or the aftermath described the scene as "horrific".

And many called for the gap in the central reservation to be closed off amid safety concerns.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We sent two ambulances, a rapid response team, Hazardous Area Response Team, one officer and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance.

"There were three patients at the scene and I believe they were all going by road to North Tees Hospital."
