Three people shot to death within 10 minutes in Chicago

CHICAGO _ Two double-shootings minutes apart on the West and South sides of Chicago ended in the deaths of three people and the critical wounding of a fourth person late Wednesday night.

A man and a woman were sitting in an SUV in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side when they were shot and killed around 11:10 p.m., police said.

Officers taped off the area around the dark-colored SUV, which sat angled in the street in the 4700 block of West Arthington Street, the driver's side door open.

Police said the man and woman were both pronounced dead on the scene.

Ten minutes later, a man was killed and another man was wounded as they were walking in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side around 11:20 p.m., police said.

Darryl Bailey, 29, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead on scene at 11:26 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. He lived in the 6000 block of South Damen Avenue, about three miles from the shooting in the 7700 block of South Racine Avenue.

The other man, 31, was shot in the pelvic area and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said.

In other shootings in Chicago Wednesday, one person was killed in another double-shooting and seven others, including boys ages 11 and 16, were wounded.

Mayo Martez, 20, was shot and killed around 1:35 p.m. during an argument that left another man wounded in a home in the 11100 block of South Emerald Avenue in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side, according to police media notification.

Martez suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:02 p.m. He lived on the block where the shooting occurred, the medical examiner said.

The other person wounded was a 25-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to the face. He was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, where he was in good condition.

The 11-year-old boy was seriously wounded when someone shot into a home in the 10300 block of South Avenue N in the East Side neighborhood at about 8:50 p.m., police said. The boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds to the left arm and chest, according to police.

The boy was standing in the home when a car drove by and someone inside shot into the home, police said. The boy was not the intended target in the shooting, police said.

The 16-year-old boy was among three people shot outside the Harrison & Homan Citgo at 3357 W. Harrison St. at about 9:45 a.m., according to police. The boy suffered gunshot wounds to the leg and body and was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to police.

A 19-year-old man was shot in the right calf, and a 25-year-old man was shot twice in the right leg and once in the left leg. Both men were in good condition at Mount Sinai.

The three were standing outside when a dark vehicle drove by and a passenger in the back seat began shooting, according to police. The three victims went in a private vehicle to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
