Three people rescued by Lough Derg RNLI after boat runs aground at Terryglass Harbour in Tipperary

Three people were rescued by Lough Derg RNLI yesterday evening after their boat ran aground at Terryglass Harbour.

Two adults and a child were onboard the 35ft cruiser at the time.

The impact damaged the boat's hull and it was taking on water.

Valentia Coastguard were alerted and they called the RNLI's inshore lifeboat The Jean Spier to help the stricken vessel.

The lifeboat launched at 6.23pm with with volunteer helm Owen Cavanagh and crew members Kjell Jimmy Gundegjerde, Doireann Kennedy and Joe O’Donoghue on board.

Within minutes, they reached the scene where an RNLI volunteer took soundings of depth and a visual assessment as the casualty boat was high up on a rocky shoal.

A crew member went aboard the damaged cruiser and found all three passengers unharmed.

RNLI volunteers took the three casualties on to the lifeboat away from immediate danger to Terryglass harbour.

The crew then set up a tow line and with a salvage pump running, the lifeboat eased the boat from the rocks and brought it into Terryglass harbour where marine engineers were on hand.

The casualty vessel was tied alongside at 8.30pm.

Speaking following the call out, Owen Cavanagh, Lough Derg RNLI helm said: "Before setting out, make sure you have the relevant charts for your journey and pay close attention to navigational markers on the lake.

"We would advise boat users to always check weather forecast in advance and always make sure there are enough lifejackets onboard for all passengers."
