Three people were fined £100 on the spot at Barry Island on Bank Holiday Monday because they refused to take their dogs off the beach. Vale of Glamorgan Council said it issued the fixed penalty notices at Whitmore Bay, where a public space protection order was in place and being enforced by council and police officers.
It comes after the council warned dog owners ahead of the bank holiday that dogs would be banned from a number of beaches in the Vale of Glamorgan from May 1 until September 30. The ban applies to Whitmore Bay at Barry Island, Dunraven Bay at Southerndown, Cwm Colhuw at Llantwit, Penarth beach (between the Pier and the Yacht club only), Penarth Pier (decking area only), and Cold Knap. This is the full list of beaches in Wales where dogs are now banned.
A statement from Vale of Glamorgan Council on Twitter on Monday said: "Three people have each received an on-the-spot £100 Fixed Penalty Notice at Whitmore Bay, #BarryIsland today after each refused to take their dogs off the beach when required to do so by an Enforcement Officer. A PSPO is in place and is enforced by our officers & @SWPValeofGlam."
