Police believe the bodies found in a burnt-out car in Melbourne's south-east overnight belong to a woman in her 30s and two girls aged under six.

Emergency services responded to reports of a car on fire on the Western Port Highway shortly before 8pm.

Police found the three bodies inside the vehicle and established a crime scene.

The vehicle was found just off the highway, in front of a farm gate.

Police said the exact circumstances leading up to the fire were still being determined, but police were not looking for anyone else at this stage.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
