Three people cut off by tide at Merseyside beauty spot in New Year's Day drama

An urgent warning has been issued by coastguards after three people were cut off by the tide at a Merseyside beauty spot.

The concerning incident was reported at Hilbre Islands in West Kirby, Wirral today and is the fourth time such a rescue operation has been called for in the past four days.

The latest group were stranded by the tide at the Middle Eye island.

Reports of the stranded group led the Wirral Coastguard to call out the West Kirby lifeboat team to rescue the three people.

West Kirby Lifeboat proceeded to the island and recovered the group back to awaiting Coastguard Rescue Officers at West Kirby slipway who gave them safety advice and information on tides.

Michael Buratti, Station Officer for Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team said: “This is the fourth incident in four days involving people getting cut off by the incoming tide near to Hilbre Island.

"We urge members of the public who are visiting the coast for a walk to check the tide times before setting off and ensure you give yourself plenty of time to return before getting caught out by the incoming tide.

"In the event you do get into trouble or you see someone in difficulty, immediately dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

Mr Buratti confirmed that no one in the stranded group today was injured - and that none of the recent incidents have resulted in injuries either.
