Three people have been arrested over a police pursuit that ended with a crash on Hillsborough Road on Wednesday afternoon.
Police initially tried to stop a blue Holden Commodore on Lookout Road, New Lambton about 2pm, but the car is alleged to have sped off.
Police gave chase, with the pursuit reaching speeds of about 100km/h in a 60km/h zone, but lost sight of the Commodore around Carnley Avenue.
A short time later emergency services were called to a crash between a Commodore and a four-wheel-drive on Hillsborough Road, near the Newcastle Inner City Bypass off ramp.
Three people in the Commodore ran from the scene into nearby bushland, police said, and a perimeter was quickly established by Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Police, with assistance from the Northern Region High Visibility Unit, Operation Utah and the Dog Unit.
Three men were arrested a short time later and taken to Toronto Police Station. The male driver and sole occupant of the four-wheel-drive was assessed at the scene but did not require transport to hospital.
Live Traffic NSW is reporting heavy traffic in the area, and police have advised to allow for extra travel time.
