Three people arrested after dozens attend short anti-lockdown protest in city centre

Three arrests have been made following an anti-lockdown protest in the city centre.

The 'short demonstration' was attended by dozens of people in Piccadilly Gardens this afternoon (Saturday).

Protesters then marched down Market Street flanked by police officers.

They were stopped on John Dalton Street by officers.

Today's demonstration is one of many anti-lockdown protests held in Manchester in recent months.

Last weekend, around 500 people attended a protest led by Jeremy Corbyn's brother Piers.

Piers Corbyn is a prominent anti-vaxxer and conspiracy theorist.

Commenting on today's protest, a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "GMP engaged with a number of protesters in Manchester city centre today and facilitated a short demonstration in line with the current COVID-19 regulations, with officers ensuring the safety of the public while respecting the right to peacefully protest.

"Three arrests were made for failing to provide details to administer fixed penalty tickets to those believed to have organised the protest, when breaches began to occur.

"The remainder of the group dispersed on police request."

Coun Pat Karney, spokesman for the city centre, condemned the actions of the protesters.

He said the council will contact the Home Secretary to ask for emergency powers to stop demonstrations in the future.

He said: "All our efforts to keep the virus under control are being undermined by the shameful actions of these people.

"For three weekends they have marched down Market Street causing mayhem.

"We will be calling on the Home Secretary to give emergency powers to GMP to stop these super spreader marches."

The protest came ahead of an announcement by Boris Johnson that rules around Christmas gatherings will be tightened.

People in Tier 1, 2, and 3 areas, including Greater Manchester, will now only be able to meet in bubbles on Christmas Day.

Residents in London and the south east in Tier 4 will no longer be allowed to form Christmas bubbles.

They are legally subjected to a 'stay home' order due to rapidly rising rates of infection, thought to be caused by a new strain of the virus.
