Three people admit starving dog to death in horrific cruelty case

Three people appeared in court charged with causing horrific cruelty to a dog in their care.

Liverpool magistrates' court heard that the dog, a black and tan female bulldog type named Coco, had effectively died after being starved to death.

Jonathan Brookshaw, 36, Leanne Brookshaw, 32, and 19-year-old Kyle Moore, have all pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, and to not taking steps to ensure its welfare needs were met.

The offences took place between March 31 and May 12 this year at a property in Dorset Gardens flats, Old Chester Road, in Birkenhead.

The RSPCA charged all three with causing unnecessary suffering to the dog, by failing to ensure that the animal received adequate food and water for its needs, resulting in the animal's death.

It further said that they did not take such steps as were reasonable in all the circumstances to ensure that the needs of the animal for which they were responsible were met. Specifically, that they failed to provide adequate nutrition, and fresh clean drinking water.

The animal had been kept in an unsuitable environment contaminated by faeces and urine, was left alone for long periods of time, was not able to exhibit normal behaviour, and they also failed to protect the dog from pain, injury or suffering.

Jonathan and Leanne Brookshaw, of Bebington Road, Birkenhead, and Kyle Moore, who gave his address as Oldfield Road, Ellesmere Port, pleaded guilty to all the offences.

The case was adjourned for pre-sentence reports to be completed on all three. They were given unconditional bail until their sentencing on December 15.
