Three pedestrians had to avoid being knocked down as driver sped through Mansfield

Three pedestrians had to take evasive action to avoid being knocked down as a dangerous driver sped through Mansfield, a court heard.

Banned driver Ashley Day sparked a police chase when officers on uniformed patrol suspected the vehicle he was driving was stolen.

Although it turned out the the car was not, uninsured Day drove off from police who approached him on foot.

He then broke the speed limit on streets and ventured onto the wrong side of a keep left bollard.

His vehicle was abandoned in Westhill Drive.

Day, 33, of Featherstone Close, Mansfield, was found on a driveway and arrested.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and having no insurance at Mansfield Magistrates' Court.

The case was sent to Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing.

The court heard his last driving ban was given on March 16, 2018. He had separate offences on his record for dangerous driving.

Felicity Campbell, mitigating for Day, said of the offences: "Police walked towards him. He panicked. He believed they might be armed and completely overreacted to the situation and drove off".

Health services previously believed Day had PTSD. He had worked with them and received cognitive behaviour treatment.

"The fact he committed these offences is of real regret and remorse to him," said Miss Campbell.

Judge Stuart Rafferty QC gave Day a sentence of nine months in prison for the dangerous driving, three months for disqualified driving concurrently, and his licence will be endorsed for having no insurance.

A fresh driving ban will last for two years and four months.

The judge told a tearful Day in the dock: "You have got to come to terms with whatever it is in your past that is causing the problems and you have got to re-engage with treatment".
