Three Nottinghamshire schools to be rebuilt as part of Government programme

Three Nottinghamshire schools are to benefit from the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme.

Toot Hill School in Bingham and Ashfield Comprehensive School and Kirkby College in Kirkby in Ashfield are three of 50 schools nationwide that will be rebuilt as part of the second stage of the programme.

The ten year programme will provide funding to rebuild 500 schools across England, as part of the Government’s plan to level up opportunity by giving every child access to better facilities in schools.

The Government is set to spend £1 billion on the programme over the next ten years.

Toot Hill School was built in 1969. Sandy Paley, executive head teacher said: “Last year, Toot Hill School celebrated its 50th year as a comprehensive school.

“Having worked alongside the staff and students for 22 of these years in its ageing accommodation, I know just how much this will mean to all who will work and learn there in the future.”

Ashfield Comprehensive School and Kirkby College are both set to benefit from “new learning environments” such as “new classrooms, science labs, sports halls, and dining halls”. The works are expected to take three to five years to complete.

The Government has also highlighted the creation of jobs in construction thanks to the programme, stating that businesses will be offering training and apprenticeships as part of their involvement in the projects

Lee Anderson, MP for Ashfield and Eastwood said: “Every child deserves to learn in a world-class school, so they can get a good education and the best possible start in life.

“This extra funding to help rebuild Ashfield Comprehensive School and Kirkby College will deliver that for children in Ashfield – giving them the best possible learning environment so they can focus on their education and catching up on lost learning after the pandemic.”
