Three Newport hair salons on the same street hit with Covid improvement orders in one day

Three hair salons on the same street have been handed improvement notices for coronavirus rule breaches on the same day.

The three business, all located on Commercial Road in Newport, were given the notices following visits from enforcement officers at Newport City Council on Tuesday, July 27.

Hair Studio on 159 Commercial Road was given a notice after it was found during an inspection that two barbers were not wearing a visor, track and trace records were not up-to-date, there was no adequate appointment system in place and its risk assessment was not available to view.

It is the second time Hair Studio has been given a Covid-19 improvement notice. On November 18 last year, council inspectors found the business had not implemented the Welsh Government requirements for staff to wear both a face mask and visor, that customers' contact information was not being retained and that there was inadequate signage outside and inside the premises informing customers of the requirement to wear face coverings. The notice was withdrawn on November 27.

On July 27, Kafi Barbers on 152 Commercial Road was also given an improvement notice after it was found a barber was not wearing a fully fitting face visor while cutting hair and track and trace records were not up-to-date.

On the same day, Mo Barbers on 64 Commercial Road was given an improvement notice after inspectors discovered that a barber was not wearing a visor while cutting hair and risk assessments were not available to view.

All businesses have been ordered to improve compliance within 48 hours or face further action.

Last week, a landlord at a Newport pub which was forced to close after being found to have breached social distancing rules said guidelines set out by the Welsh Government were too confusing.

Ye Olde Bull Inn in Caerleon was handed a closure notice on Tuesday, July 20. A council report said the pub “failed to take all responsible measures to minimise the risk of exposure to coronavirus”.

Pub landlord Peter Rae said: "Following the First Minister’s announcement that social distancing had ended outside, the guidance was slow to be produced and was worded in a very ambiguous way.

“It’s very hard for customers to keep up to date with the constant changes, as nationally - and even regionally - the interpretations of the rules seem to differ.

“Everyone has their own opinions on the reopening of hospitality. We have consistently worked closely with the authorities to provide a safe, enjoyable experience and we will continue to do so.”

The closure notice was later withdrawn and the pub was able to reopen as of 12pm on Friday, July 23.
