Three new BTech courses at Delhi University await nod from Centre, admission process stuck

NEW DELHI: The three BTech courses that Delhi University is planning to start are yet to get approval of the Union ministry of education. Due to this, the admission process has not yet been notified.

In December 2021, DU’s statutory body had cleared the setting up of three engineering courses — BTech in computer science, electronics and communication and electrical engineering. The university had sought Rs 100 crore from University Grants Commission.

Following this, the Faculty of Technology was revamped and a new head appointed. The university had also announced the setting up of new academic blocks for these new departments. DU had also set up a committee to draft course content and structure.

Apart from the BTech courses, the DU website has also listed the departments of applied sciences and humanities, architecture and planning, instrumentation and control engineering, civil engineering, production and industrial engineering and mechanical engineering.

After Jawaharlal Nehru University, DU would be the next one to start technical courses. In the past, Delhi School of Engineering (DSE) and Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) were affiliated to DU. These later became universities. DSE is now Delhi Technological University and NSIT is Netaji Subhas University of Technology.

When the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) was introduced in 2013, the university had run BTech courses in 27 colleges. Later, when FYUP was withdrawn, All India Council for Technical Education had allowed the batch to complete their course. The university then ran BTech courses in computer science, electronics, food technology, instrumentation electronics and allied papers and polymer science.

KS Rao, the dean of the faculty, said, “The university wants to start the course from this academic session. We have not notified admissions as we are waiting for approval from the ministry of education for funds and manpower. Like other engineering colleges and the set process, we will also be admitting students through the Joint Entrance Examination Main. .”
