Three more shops in West Lothian town have closed down with loss of jobs

A number of shops did not open at a West Lothian shopping centre after lockdown.

The Courier reported in December on the Debenhams store shutting down after its owners, the Arcadia group, went into liquidation.

Jobs were also at risk at Burtons, Dorothy Perkins and Top Shop - who also operated under the Arcadia group.

The Courier can now confirm that these stores will not reopen, with administrators Deloitte LLP currently selling off the old brands.

The old premises of all three brands at The Centre have been lying empty since the shopping centre reopened after lockdown.

And all three have now fallen into the hands of giant online retailers.

The Boohoo Group Plc bought the Dorothy Perkins and Burtons brands but only wanted the brand and the stock, and all 214 stores in the UK shut.

Boohoo’s rivals, Asos Plc bought over the Top Shop brands in a similar deal, with all their stores shutting down and staff paid off.

Deloitte had set the deadline of May 27 to sell off Arcadia’s remaining intellectual property assets.

A spokesperson for Deloitte said: “This is one of the largest and most complex retail administrations in UK history, which spans eight brands and 27 separate companies.”

The Arcadia Group employed more than 19,000 people across the world, with over 1000 stores in 34 countries.

So far up to 2000 jobs are already said to have been lost in the UK since Philip Green’s Aracdia group went bust, with a further 10,000 members of the Arcadia pension scheme facing a hit.
