Three more patients test positive for coronavirus bringing UK total to 23

A further three patients have tested positive for coronavirus in England bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the UK to 23.

Nearly 10,500 tests have now been carried out in the UK and health officials say they continue to test 'a significant number' of people for the virus.

Chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty confirmed that two of the new cases recently travelled to the UK from Italy, while the other arrived from Asia.

In a statement, he said: "As of 9am this morning, three further patients in England have tested positive for Covid-19.

The Department for Health has said that new cases of coronavirus will be included in a daily update issued at 2pm from now on.

A spokesperson tweeted: "We continue to test a significant number of people. Due to this, and until further notice, the figures tweeted at 2pm will be confirmed numbers as of 9am that same day.

"This change is to make sure we provide you with accurate information, without further delays.

"We also plan to announce future confirmed cases in England as part of the 2pm figures, rather than separately. This is to make sure you get the latest information at the same time each day.

"If there is a change in circumstances, we'll communicate this as soon as possible."
