Three more patients die of coronavirus at Royal Bolton Hospital - taking total above 50

More than 50 people have now died from coronavirus in Bolton.

Figures released today by NHS England show three more patients have lost their lives at the Royal Bolton Hospital after testing positive for the disease - taking the total up to 52.

The numbers have dropped in the last few days following a peak on Wednesday which saw eleven patients pronounced dead, the largest number since the pandemic began.

Although three additional deaths in Bolton were all announced today, the patients may not have all died in the last 24 hours as there is often a delay in the reporting of cases.

There have been 223 confirmed cases in the borough but, as many people are not being tested, it is likely the number of people who have contracted the disease is higher.

Across Greater Manchester there have been an additional 22 deaths, taking the total up to 381.

The government's figures relate to patients who have died in hospital and do not include deaths in the community, for example in care homes, so the true death toll will be higher.
