Three more home runs help lift Yankees over Orioles, 9-3

BALTIMORE _ This season at Camden Yards, there are no Yankees fans making the trek down I-95.

And there are no Orioles fans to interrupt those 'Let's Go Yankees' chants, at least until things get out of hand.

Inside an empty ballpark near the Inner Harbor, the Yankees quickly made themselves at home Wednesday night.

DJ LeMahieu led off with a homer to right, two catcher's interference calls led to another first-inning run, and the Yankees were off toward a 9-3 victory in the O's home opener.

Aaron Judge and Aaron Hicks collected their first home runs of the year, allowing Gerrit Cole to coast into the seventh inning.

But Cole (2-0) couldn't get the final out in the seventh, yielding two doubles and a two-run homer by Dwight Smith Jr.

Until that point, Cole had retired 14 straight Orioles and 19 out of 20 after Jose Iglesias' first-inning, RBI double. In 6 2/3 innings, Cole yielded three runs on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Yet, for a club that hadn't played since Sunday, the Yankees (3-1) didn't show any rust in beating the Orioles (2-2) for the 17th straight time since last year and the 16th straight time at Camden Yards.

And after being delayed to summer camp due to an asymptomatic bout with COVID-19, LeMahieu went 4 for 5 with two RBIs.
