Three-month-old baby mauled to death by dog in Waterford to be buried this afternoon

A three-month-old baby girl who died on Monday after being mauled by a dog while sleeping will be buried on Wednesday.

Mia O’Connell was attacked at her home in Clashmore in the early hours of Monday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and the tot was brought to Cork University Hospital.

However, despite the best efforts of medical staff, she was pronounced dead at around 3.15am.

Mia was sleeping in her bedroom at the time of the attack and is understood to have sustained serious injuries to her head.

The terrier-type animal is not believed to be owned by the family but was staying at the house at the time.

On Tuesday, Gardai said that a post-mortem has taken place adding that the results will not be released due to operational reasons.

A statement read: "The post-mortem has been completed on the three-month-old infant who was fatally injured by a dog at a residence in Clashmore, Co. Waterford in the early hours of Monday morning, 7th June 2021.

"The animal which was involved in the incident has now been destroyed.

"An Garda Síochána has appointed a family liaison officer to the family and An Garda Síochána continues to support the family at this tragic time."

Locals in the small town of Clashmore, Waterford, were in a state of shock as the news broke with one lady telling the Irish Mirror: “It’s just so shocking and sad.

“They hadn’t lived here too long, I think they were from Cork originally.

“It’s just tragic for someone to lose their child in a way like this.”

Local priest Fr Milo Guiry said that it was a “terrible tragedy”.

He added: “We will keep the family in our prayers. Every support will be offered to them. It is terrible news.”

Minister Simon Harris commented: “The absolute hearts of everybody go out to that family.

“What a tragic incident we’re all after hearing of.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further other than to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family and community affected on what has just been the most horrifically, sad tragedy.”
