More than three million Britons have downloaded an app designed by researchers at King’s College London to track the symptoms of coronavirus.

Professor Tim Spector said he was “stunned” by the public response to the Covid Symptom Tracker app.

He said using “big data” to trace early symptoms was the key to safely lifting the lockdown.

Data provided to the app allows researchers to estimate that 288,436 people have symptoms of coronavirus today — including 0.8 per cent of Londoners.

Writing in the Standard, Professor Spector said the app was a “more efficient way to track the early signs of coronavirus than testing for active infections”.
