Three men jailed after shotgun fired into Hillfields home

A man who was stabbed in the head mounted a "revenge attack" in which a shotgun was fired into a Hillfields home.

Michael Porter enlisted the help of Theo Thorne to blast three shots into the home of Ben Jeffrey's father in Gorse Hill.

Bristol Crown Court was told the shooting was prompted by Porter blaming Ben Jeffrey for an attack on him.

And it was the prosecution's case that Frank Bennett helped to dispose of evidence afterwards.

Judge Michael Longman jailed Porter, in his absence for seven years.

He jailed Thorne for four years and Bennett for two years.

He told the men: "The intention was to threaten the occupants of the house.

"There was no intention to injure anyone.

"The house was occupied, including by a child aged five, although not Ben Jeffrey.

"If anyone was sleeping in the front room the consequences could have been much more severe than they were."

Anjali Gohil, prosecuting, said three shots were heard about 4.19am on July 1 last year in Gorse Hill, but there were no witnesses as to who fired the weapon.

Miss Gohil said Ben Jeffrey and Michael Porter had a turbulent relationship and did not get on with each other.

She told the court: "Mr Jeffrey didn't admit causing injury to Michael Porter on the night of the shooting.

"But Mr Porter went to hospital in the early hours with a head injury that appeared to be bleeding.

"The Crown says he had been injured on that night by Ben Jeffrey and he held Ben Jeffrey responsible."

It was the prosecution's case that Porter and Thorne were involved in the shooting while Bennett assisted in removing and retrieving evidence - possibly ammunition - to and from nearby wasteground.

One shotgun cartridge was found at the scene while 11 cartridges were recovered outside flats linked to the defendants.

Miss Gohil said: "This was a revenge attack.

"It was calculated and designed to cause fear.

"It was directed at the family of Ben Jeffrey.

"There was a young boy who was living in that address and another teen who was living at that address.

"It is fortunate no-one was sleeping in that room.

"Had somebody been walking through they would have received very serious injuries indeed.

"There was a reckless disregard for life in that sense."

The court heard Bennett was only aware "something" had happened when he helped his friends.

Thorne was said to have little relevant previous convictions.
