Three teens are fighting for their lives after they fell about 30ft down a '150ft' cliff face near the site of a popular festival, prompting a major rescue operation.

The badly injured trio are believed to include and 18-year-old and two 19-year-olds.

They have all sustained multiple serious injuries, described as potentially life-threatening or changing and their next of kin have been informed, Cornwall Live reports.

HM Coastguard at Falmouth said they received a call from one of the men at around midnight saying that he and two others had fallen at Porthleven and needed help.

The man that called the Coastguard was able to use the torch on his mobile phone to help identify their location.

A rescue operation involving three coastguard rescue teams, a helicopter, lifeboat, police and ambulance went to their aid.

Police said they do not yet know whether the three people were intending to go to the Porthleven Masked Ball or if they were at the festival at the time of the incident.

One witness said: "It all happened next to the Ball site. Everyone could see what was going on.

"The helicopter landed in a field next to the Ball site.

"It's quite a rocky cliff face. They weren't festival attendees because they didn't have wristbands on, from what I have heard."

A witness added: "I would say it's a 150ft high, sheer cliff face. I wouldn't climb it."

A spokesman for Falmouth Coastguard said: "HM Coastguard received a call at around midnight on May 5 from a male saying that he and two other men had fallen approximately 30ft down the cliff at Porthleven and they were requesting our assistance.

"The Porthleven, Penzance and Mullion coastguard rescue teams, the Lizard Lifeboat, HM Coastguard operations area commander and HM Coastgaurd search and rescue helicopter from Newquay were sent to the scene, along with the ambulance service and Devon and Cornwall Police.

"Three men were recovered via helicopter and taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth."

All three men are in Derriford Hospital at the moment with serious injuries, a police statement said.

The police were called to the scene shortly after midnight by the ambulance service, following reports of people falling down the cliff.

The families of the men have all been made aware of the incident.

Porthleven Masked Ball has been labelled 'the best party in the south west' and is one of the longest running festivals in the region.

But recently organisers said the future of the three-day event over the May Day Bank Holiday could be the last ever because of people trying to get in for free, according to reports.

Martin Leslie, The Coastguard's coastal operations area commander, said of the rescue operation: "This was a demonstration of exceptional joint emergency service working in an extremely difficult environment.

"The helicopter crew showed outstanding skills transferring the teams to the scene. Special praise must also be given to the critical care paramedics' excellent pre-hospital care to the casualties."
