Men to face court charged with murder and armed robbery after teen dies in Gold Coast balcony fall

Three men charged with murder over the death of a 19-year-old man in Surfers Paradise on Saturday morning are due to face court on Monday morning.

Gold Coast police were called to an apartment complex around 3:15am on Saturday where the body of Brisbane man Cian English was found at the base of the building.

They allege that, prior to his death, a group of people from one unit went to another unit armed with a knife, and a robbery occurred.

Three men, aged 18, 20 and 22, were arrested and have all been charged with one count of murder and two counts of armed robbery.

One man, 18, is expected to appear in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court today while the two others are due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court today.

Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said police would allege two groups of people had been staying at the hotel, unknown to each other, when one group approached the others' room.

He said the two groups ended up partying together in one of the rooms.

Police said a number of people at the party had taken prescription drugs allegedly stolen from chemists.

"[It's alleged] the three main offenders robbed the victim and his friend at knifepoint," he said.

"The [alleged] robbery related to a phone and some clothing.

"And during the course of that, the victim has attempted to escape and gone over the balcony and died.

"Investigators have spoken with the family and they're just shattered."

In a statement released to the media, Mr English's family said they were "devastated by this tragedy and respectfully ask for privacy as the police investigation into the circumstances continues".

Detective Superintendent Smith said the three men charged were known to police.

"We're looking at [the trio's] links to a series of break and enters on the northern end of the Gold Coast," he said.

"I think young people today need to understand there are serious consequences if you're going to take a knife anywhere, or be involved in this sort of behaviour.

"Our priority is on the solving of this serious and vicious crime."
