Three men arrested in Athlone, Co Westmeath over death threats 'linked with Fermanagh machete attack'

Three men have been charged in Westmeath over death threats believed to be linked to a recent horror machete attack.

Gardai in Athlone carried out a number of planned searches looking for weapons which were displayed in threatening videos posted online, as well as the devices used.

Three men, one aged in his late 40s and two in their 20s, were arrested.

A number of devices and weapons were seized during the searches.

The three men are due to appear before Mullingar District Court on Friday morning.

The arrests are believed to be connected to the horrific machete attack on a family in Fermanagh last Saturday.

The 13-year-old girl received cuts to her back and legs during the brutal attack at a house on Trasna Way, Lisnaskea.

A Garda spokesperson said of today’s arrests: “These males are currently being detained at Mullingar and Athlone Garda Station and are detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

“Gardaí in Athlone are liaising with the PSNI in relation to the persons arrested and the social media videos as may be connected to a recent serious incident in Co Fermanagh, which is under investigation by the PSNI.”
