Three men arrested after incident where shots fired at gardai in Co Donegal

Three men were arrested following an incident during which shots were fired at gardai in Co Donegal.

A patrol car was damaged but no one injured during what a Garda spokesman described as a "brief stand-off" shortly after midnight on Saturday on Mill Road in Glenties.

Gardai were called to the scene following a report of shots being fired.

A garda spokesman said: "A number of Garda units attended at the scene.

"During a brief stand-off the armed man shot in the direction of gardai causing damage to a patrol car before he was apprehended by armed gardai.

"The armed man, who is aged in his early 20s, was arrested and taken to Ballyshannon Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act, 1939.

"A rifle, a hunting knife and a number of rounds of ammunition were seized."

Two other men, ages in their 20s and 40s, were arrested and a second firearm seized during a follow-up operation at a house on Main Street.

The spokesman said officers did not fire any shots.
