Three Manchester United players ruled out of AS Roma second leg as squad confirmed

Manchester United will be without injured duo Anthony Martial and Daniel James for the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against AS Roma.

The attacking pair were both absent from the 24-man travelling squad named for the match by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Wednesday afternoon, while defender Phil Jones remains a long-term absentee.

United confirmed Wales international James will miss the trip through injury, while Martial is yet to recover from a knee injury he suffered while away on international duty with France back in March.

United go into the match all but assured of a place in the Europa League Final after they defeated Roma 6-2 in their first leg at Old Trafford last week.

Roma led the match 2-1 at half-time before Solskjaer's side struck five unanswered goals after the break to put one foot in the Gdansk final later this month.

Ahead of the second leg Solskjaer praised his fitness staff for the role they are playing at the club and the way in which his side are coping with a packed fixture schedule.

"We’ve got great staff," he said at his pre-match press conference. "Fantastic fitness staff. It’s been a process since I came in. We’ve brought some young staff in. Young Charlie has been tremendous, working on robustness, resilience. Being able to play 50 games for Man United.

"A winning Man United team has players who can play 45, 50 games at a high, high standard. When you don't play you have to be prepared. When you’re a sub I know how difficult it is to get the complete match fitness, by not playing complete full games.

"When you play games you get into a rhythm and then you have to hope you don't get injuries.”
