Three Manchester United players face auditions in pre-season fixture vs Derby this weekend

As the dust continues to settle on the conclusion of the European Championship the hard work continues for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of his most pivotal season yet at Manchester United.

The next twelve months will see the end of his initial three-year cycle at Old Trafford; after two full campaigns of steady progress the bare minimum requirement is to be seriously challenging for the Premier League title.

Changes are being made both on and off the pitch to ensure they are best placed to do so, Jadon Sancho will be officially unveiled in club colours this week while highly-rated coach Eric Ramsay has been appointed to improve proficiency from set-pieces.

They could prove to be two key transformations in the United squad this summer, though Solskjaer also has a couple of options to experiment with in order to get the best from his playing squad.

Two positions still in need of strengthening are right-back and central midfield, areas of the pitch which will looked at after the centre of the defence is reinforced.

Progress continues to be made over a move for Raphael Varane with United close to agreeing personal terms, though the same can't be said for targets in the aforementioned positions.

Kieran Trippier is planning a move back to England, though talks are at a standstill given the wide difference in the player's valuation between United and La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, midfield gem Eduardo Camavinga is merely a player of interest, rather than a firm target who United are prioritising signing this summer.

The duo are admired by the club, but moves this summer will only happen if the financial terms suit United, with each player viewed as a bonus buy to supplement the squad rather than essential refurbishment.

It means Solskjaer is keeping his options open in the weeks ahead and in the first pre-season match against Derby this weekend we could see three players given open auditions for such roles.

On the right side of the defence there could be an opportunity for either Diogo Dalot or Ethan Laird to stake their claim as the attacking alternative to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, while in midfield James Garner should get the chance to show why he deserves to be a regular in the senior set-up.

Dalot has to be seen as the frontrunner for the right-back role given his encouraging displays at Euro 2020 on the back of a decent loan with AC Milan, with Laird still in need of more senior game time if he is to make it in the top-flight.

A lack of Premier League experience is also the one thing holding Garner back from being unleashed next season, with the 20-year-old targeting a high-profile loan departure following an impressive end to the season with Nottingham Forest.

His age - 20 - means there is pressure for him to break through this season and there is an appreciation that even if Garner were to remain at Old Trafford next season he probably wouldn't be given regular minutes.

Despite that this summer is still a huge opportunity for him to showcase just how much he has developed both on and off the pitch over the past season as the Birkenhead-born youngster transformed from a shy hopeful into a mature young professional.

Garner has cut his teeth in men's football and was well up to the challenge, now his ambition is to be involved in first-team duties every single week.

United's line up at Pride Park this weekend will be influenced by the absence of key international players, but there will still be huge interest in the ones selected in their absence.
