Three males assault elderly man in 'unprovoked attack' outside a school in Gateshead

Northumbria Police are investigating a report that three males assaulted an elderly man in an unprovoked attack in Gateshead last night.

A recording of the incident was shared on social media following the attack at around 7.50pm yesterday outside Lord Lawson School in Birtley.

Northumbria Police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.

Support is also being offered to the elderly victim.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 7.50pm yesterday (Wednesday) police received a report of an assault in Gateshead.

“It was reported that three males had assaulted an elderly man in an apparent unprovoked attack and shared a recording of this on social media.

“An investigation was immediately launched. The victim is being supported by officers and enquires are on-going."

The spokesperson asked that anybody who sees the video on social media does not share it and, instead, has urged anybody with further information to come forward.

“We would ask that anyone who sees the video does not share this any further, and that anyone with information about this incident, or those involved contact police immediately by calling 101 or using the Tell us Something page quoting log NP-20210610-0851.”
