Three Liverpool youngsters nominated for Golden Boy award previously won by two ex-Reds

Three Liverpool youngsters are on the initial 100-man longlist for the 2020 Golden Boy award.

The award - which is decided by Italian publication Tuttosport - goes to the best young player under the age of 21 in world football, and has previously been picked up by the likes of Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero.

Former Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart was the very first winner back in 2003, while the 2019 award went to Atletico Madrid prodigy Joao Felix.

Former Liverpool players Mario Balotelli (2010) and Raheem Sterling (2014) have also won it in the past, and three young Liverpool players will be hoping to follow in their footsteps.

The Reds youngster with the best chance of making into onto a shorter list of nominees is local midfielder Curtis Jones, who has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign for the Reds in 2019/20.

Jones has featured twice in the Premier League, and memorably scored a stunning winner in the FA Cup third round victory over Everton as well as in the fourth round at Shrewsbury.

Young left-back Yasser Larouci also makes the list having made his first two appearances for the senior side this season, both coming in those aforementioned fixtures Jones scored in.

Sepp van den Berg arrived at Liverpool in the summer (PA)

Centre-back Sepp van den Berg is the third member of the Liverpool trio on the list.

The Dutch youngster was the Reds' first signing of last summer, and he has so far featured four times for the senior side.

There is no place on the list for Harvey Elliott, who recently turned 17, while at 21 Trent Alexander-Arnold is now too old to be nominated.
