A tiger has bitten an apparently intoxicated woman who broke into a zoo in Nebraska to pat the animal, police have said.

The 33-year-old woman suffered a severe hand injury in the incident at Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha early on Sunday, said officer James Shade.

The woman was identified by police as Jacqueline Eide. The animal that zoo officials believe bit the woman is named Mai, an 18-year-old, three-legged Malayan tiger, according to the New York Times.

Police said officers were called to the Creighton University medical center about 7.20am after the injured woman showed up. Shade said Eide was acting aggressively and appeared to be intoxicated.

Police determined she had sneaked into the zoo and was bitten when she reached into the tiger exhibit.

The woman has been cited for criminal trespass.
