Three Leeds United signings prove Victor Orta's transfer blueprint is paying dividends already

Leeds United have geared their recent transfer business towards signing the most talented young players and bringing them into the Under-23 set-up and even the senior squad.

From Sam Greenwood to Ian Poveda, there have been many cheap signings made over the past year or two that have bolstered the Whites' crop of young players.

It has been a noticeable strategy of the club, and it is paying dividends, as LUFC Youth highlighted on Twitter.

In recent years, Leeds have signed Pascal Struijk on a free transfer from Ajax, Leif Davis for £50,000 from Morecambe, Illan Meslier from Lorient for £5million, and Poveda from Manchester City on an initial free transfer that has several clauses which could lead to a £1million fee.

Should Pablo Hernandez start ahead of Mateusz Klich?

Leeds fans were justifiably excited about these players, especially Poveda, Meslier and Struijk, all of which have featured for the first team in the Premier League this season, with Meslier already the number one goalkeeper and Struijk having started seven of the last eight matches in all competitions.

In reply to the tweet, one fan said: "Poveda, Struijk & Meslier are future super stars, no doubt in my mind."

Another added: "Can’t leave Leif Davis out of that.

"People at the club say he’s one of the most talented youngsters we’ve ever had and he’s shown glimpses in the first team just because he isn't getting many first team minutes shouldn’t be a lot to go by he’s competing with internationals."

Another fan was highest on Struijk. "Don't think Poveda will go anywhere with his career, Leif needs to step up now or he'll be off next summer, but Struijk . . . gonna big huge!"

This is the product of Victor Orta's transfer strategy. He is critical to Leeds' recruitment approach, which has significantly changed in recent years.

Marcelo Bielsa has, of course, been at the forefront of this. He is known for his development of players, and Pep Guardiola praised the Leeds boss when Poveda initially departed City.

Via MEN Sport, Guardiola was asked why Poveda was allowed to leave the Etihad even though he still had six months remaining on his contract.

"Because he's young, he has to play, he's not able [to play here] and Leeds is an incredible challenge to be training with one of the best managers in the world in terms of how he helps players to be better players.

"For the way Leeds play, it should suit his qualities perfectly.

"I didn't speak with Ian but either way it's a really good decision for him."
