Three Lanarkshire causes benefit from £12k raised by popular supermarket

Shoppers in Hamilton recent came together to celebrate thousands of pounds being donated to local community causes.

Thanks to the town's Co-op store's membership card scheme, which sees a percentage of customers' spend in the shop go to charity, a total of £11,927.69 was raised for three different groups.

Representatives from The Rocca Foundation, Lanarkshire Scout Group and local disability charity PAMIS were greeted by members of the Hamilton's Co-op in the Community team last week and were presented with their cheques.

A total of £4339.30 was raised for The Rocca Foundation; whilst the Lanarkshire Scout Group were handed £3749.06; and PAMIS received their cheque for £3839.03.

The company's customer membership card scheme allows two per cent of any Co-op product bought awarded back on to the card and another two per cent goes towards the local community fund which gets split between three chosen causes.

Via an online app, customers can choose which cause they'd like to see their money donated to, or instead have it split evenly across the three community groups.

The money is raised over a period of a year with this year's community fund running from October 2020 to October 2021.

To celebrate on the day, the Mill Road store organised a Frozen themed event which saw a spectacular dome from the movie put up by local firm Bubbles of Fun Hot-Tub Hire.

The event also saw special appearances from some of the Disney characters including Olaf the snowman.

Anne Marie McKenzie, manager of the Co-op store in Hamilton told Lanarkshire Live : "It was great celebrating our Frozen style presentation with our customers and local causes in store.

"An amazing £11,927.69 was split between the three of them.

"We can't thank all our members enough, and a special thanks to Pamela from Bubble of Fun Hot Tub Hire for setting up her beautiful dome.

"We had a fantastic igloo dome set up for the kids.

"Representatives from the three different causes came along on the day to receive their cheques and customers were able to see where their contributions to the community fund goes to."

The membership card scheme for the community causes fundraising is back up and running again for the current year with another three community causes chosen where customers can donate to.
