What’s New: Three people were found dead after a fire at an unfinished research facility of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. in Dongguan, southern China’s Guangdong province, local authorities said Friday.
The fire started around 4:50 p.m. Friday at the 5,000 square-meter steel-structure facility, which is still under construction. The three dead were property management staffers in the industrial park where the facility is located, authorities said.
The main material burning was sound-absorbing cotton, and causes of the fire are still under investigation, the local fire department said. Huawei said the company could not yet provide details on the fire.
More to know: Huawei in recent years invested heavily to expand its research facilities in the Songshan Lake era of Dongguan, building research labs and campuses for training.
The first phase of the Huawei project covering an area of 146,000 square meters involved 989 million yuan ($145 million) of investment. The facility was designed to conduct research for Huawei’s devices and carriers’ solutions business, public records showed.
