Five men injured in Melbourne scaffolding collapse

Emergency services were called to the Craigieburn building site shortly after 1:00pm.

Two men have been seriously injured in a scaffolding collapse at a construction site in Melbourne's north.

A CFA spokesperson said emergency services were called to an address at Fortitude Drive, Craigieburn, at 1:11pm yesterday following reports a person was trapped in a scaffolding collapse.

Helicopter footage showed a large amount of scaffolding had fallen in front of a partially constructed building at the site.

Workers in high-visibility vests could also be seen sitting on the footpath beside the site, as firefighters and SES workers gathered nearby.

In a statement, Ambulance Victoria said it treated five people at the scene, including a man in his 20s and another in his 50s who were taken to hospital in serious conditions.

Three other men, whose ages ranged from 20s to 30s, were taken to hospital in stable conditions.

WorkSafe Victoria's chief of business operations Marnie Williams told ABC Radio Melbourne inspectors and investigators were on the scene but it was "too early to comment on the circumstances of the collapse".

Ms Williams said the site was being made safe but she could not comment on whether WorkSafe had been in contact with the company responsible for the scaffolding.

She said it would be "a complex investigation" and any applicable charges would be laid within 12 months.
