Three people - a man and two women - were flown to hospital suffering serious injuries after their vehicle was involved in a collision with a train south of Dungog Tuesday afternoon.
Police, Ambulance and two medical helicopter crews rushed to the scene at a rural rail crossing at Wallarobba about 4.40pm, where a Toyota Tarago and train had collided, flipping the car and ejecting one passenger.
The 59-year-old female driver and another 65-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries. They were freed from the vehicle with assistance from bystanders, and were treated for abdominal, pelvic, shoulder and facial injuries.
A 65-year-old male passenger was thrown from the vehicle and sustained serious pelvic injuries.
They were all treated at the scene by paramedics before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where they remain in a serious condition.
The train, meanwhile, was reportedly carrying a driver and nine passengers, including school children, none of whom were injured as a result of the crash.
