Three in hospital after ambulance vehicle crashes in Sandyford on way to 999 call

Three people are in hospital after an ambulance vehicle crashed while responding to a 999 call.

The crash occurred near Portland Terrace, in Sandyford, on Monday evening.

Police were called to the scene with a witness claiming part of the road was blocked off.

"One of our vehicles was involved in a road traffic collision on the junction of B1307 and Portland Terrace just after 7pm this evening whilst travelling to a 999 call," said a North East Ambulance Service Spokesperson.

"We immediately arranged a second crew for the initial patient and dispatched a further two double crewed ambulances, two crews from our hazardous response team and an officer.

"Three patients were transported to the RVI."

The condition of the three patients has not yet been made public.

One passer-by told ChronicleLive: "Portland Terrace was closed off and there was a police car down there parked at 45 degrees so nobody could go past.

"It looked like there were fire engines and paramedics and there were lights flashing everywhere."

The bus operator Go North East tweeted that the crash had impacted some services which were unable to stop between Sandyford Road and Benton House.
