Three hurt in two traffic incidents near same spot in downtown Des Plaines

July 24--Three people were hit by cars in two separate incidents Thursday afternoon at nearly the same spot in downtown Des Plaines on Miner Street across from the city's Metra train station.

A 69-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle while she was on a crosswalk at 1:45 p.m. at 1484 East Miner St., according to a news release from Des Plaines police. Police said the woman was taken by the Des Plaines Fire Department to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for medical care.

Police Chief Bill Kushner said the woman was is in extremely critical condition following emergency surgery. The driver of the vehicle, an 88-year-old woman, remained on scene following the accident, police said.

About two hours later, two 13-year-old girls on bicycles were struck by a vehicle traveling east at nearly the same location on Miner Street, and officers on scene investigating the earlier crash witnessed the second one, according to the news release. Both girls were taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. The driver of the vehicle was a 32-year-old woman, police said.

Kushner said one girl suffered a fractured skill and was admitted for observation. The other girl suffered a fractured clavicle and was released from the hospital.

Investigations of both crashes are ongoing and charges against the drivers are pending, Kushner said.
