Three hurt in 'drive-by shooting' at anniversary event to mark Rashan Charles' death

A shocked witness has described how she saw 'trails of blood' in a street after a reported drive-by shooting at an event marking the second anniversary of Rashan Charles' death.

The witness said one man was shot in the stomach outside the Yours Locally shop in Kingsland Road, Dalston, London, at around 10.30pm last night.

Police say three males in total have gone to hospital with wounds believed to be linked to the shooting.

Rashan Charles, 20, died on July 22, 2017 after being chased by police into the Yours Locally shop, before swallowing a package containing a mixture of paracetamol and caffeine while being detained.

There were riots in east London after the young dad's death, with many blaming police for his passing.

Eyewitness Fiona Stewart, from Dalston, said she saw blood and shattered glass on the pavement outside the store last night.

She told Mirror Online: "There were specks of blood everywhere on the pavement. There were trails of blood.

"A lady was sat down outside and said she was with the guy who had been shot in the stomach. I don't know if he (the shooter) was aiming at him or the group.

"Apparently a guy came down the cobbled road in a car and shot a bloke commemorating the death (of Rashan Charles). The lady I spoke to said it was a black car.

"A guy in the supermarket told me he was a masked guy (the shooter)."

Ms Stewart, who saw the aftermath of the shooting while walking home, said police reached the scene shortly after she did.

Police said they were called to shots heard in Kingsland Road at around 10.30pm on Monday, 22 July.

In a subsequent tweet Hackney Police said: "Three men attended hospital following shots fired in Kingsland Road #Hackney last night. We understand none of them is in a critical condition. An investigation is underway. No arrest yet. Witnesses pls call 101 ref 8961/jul22."

Rashan Charles, a father-of-one, died of cardiac arrest and an obstructed airway, an inquest in June last year found.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) found that while an officer, known only as BX47, had not done his job satisfactorily and detained Mr Charles in an "unorthodox" way, he was not guilty of misconduct.

Mr Charles' death sparked huge riots in east London as protesters threw bottles at police, launched fireworks and burned mattresses in the street.

Demonstrations saw roads blocked off and fires lit in Hackney, while around 150 people, many holding Black Lives Matter banners, brought traffic to a standstill.
